THE FRANK E BOOMA POST 6

 NEWSLETTER

Founded 1919

July 2009

 Commander -- Frank Desper

COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

This newsletter is being published early due to our attendance is required at the state convention.  To update you and key on upcoming events at the Post, Flag Day went very well, both at the Post home and Portsmouth Elks.  I was very proud to see the large number of members present at the Elks representing the Post.  Take a look at the Junior Vice Commander's input concerning the Children’s Outing.  He’s changing the theme this year and is hosting it at Chucky Cheese.  The Color Guard monthly Fish Fry is postponed for July and will be served in August.  Thank you for supporting the Color Guard’s fund raiser and hope to see you then.  For those of you who missed the state convention, the delegates will make their reports at the July 16th meeting starting at 1800 hours.  Jumping ahead so you can mark your calendars, a very historic event landmarked our Post, August 11, 1919 is the date the Post received its Charter.  During last year’s rededication ceremony on August 9, 2008, New Hampshire Governor John Lynch presented a proclamation to the Post as did the City of Portsmouth , Mayor Tom Ferrini declaring it Frank E. Booma Day.  This day will be honored and respected in August I will get back to you on the celebration festivities.  I want to take this time to announce that this year’s membership renewal along with new members the Post exceeded its 100% goal, 102.51% to be exact; currently we enroll 652 members on the roster.  This says a lot about our Post and the things we do for our community.  While I’m on the subject of membership, the Adjutant will be in possession of the new 2010 membership cards when he returns from the convention.  Starting from his return and going until October 15th if you renew your membership you will receive an “Early Bird” stamp on your card.  What this means to you is, in the past, the Post offered special opportunities for those who hold early bird stamped cards.  Your first opportunity will be on Labor Day weekend.  On Saturday, September 5, 2009 starting at 11a.m., I will put on a B-B-Q in the parking lot for those who have an early bird card, it will be an all you can eat “FREE” and for those who do not have an early bird card will require a donation.  This and many other offers will be in place for future events for early bird card holders.   “This offer is only valid for Post 6, Unit 6 and Squadron 6 members.  As always, we have marker flags for those of you who need them.  I want to thank all the volunteers who are helping with the beatification of the Post Home, I like to call it “Ship-Shape.”  If you have any questions or comments all of the officers are available to assist you.  Check out our web-site www.feboomapost6.org or you can contact me directly at cmdr_post6@comcast.net

JUNIOR VICE COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

The Children's Outing is going to be on Sunday August 23, 2009. It will be held at Chuck E. Cheese in Newington starting at 11:00 a.m. There will be pizza, soft drinks, cake & ice cream along with some tokens for the children. The outing will be for children 17 and under, plenty of games there for all. Chuck E. Cheese has very strict rules regarding the children and parent/guardian; children must leave with the same adult they arrived with. Please use the sign up slip provided for names and number of children and parent/guardian per family attending, to help us meet Chuck E. Cheese safety/accountability rules. There will be an envelope in the grille for the sign up slips. The sooner the slips are in the better for an accurate count of those attending.

ADJUTANT’S MESSAGE

Our Legion Baseball season started on Monday June 15, 2009 and will continue until Wednesday, July 15, 2009. The schedule is posted in the grille in the Post display case or you may get the schedule online at www.nhlegion.org  and go to Legion baseball, Division A.  On Wednesday July 8, 2009 the Post is sponsoring a cookout at the V.A. Hospital in Manchester. We need people to work it. You need to be there by 1100. If the weather is good it will be held in the solarium and if inclement weather it will be in the dining room.  The Post is supporting a raffle for a custom motorcycle with 5% of the proceeds to go to Children and Youth and 5% to go to the Department Commander’s project. There will be 1000 tickets sold at $50 each. Let's hope we have a sell out for this. The drawing will be on Saturday September 5, 2009.

Our State Convention will be on Friday, June 26, 2009 through Sunday, June 28, 2009. I will receive the new membership cards at that time. You may see me after that weekend to renew your membership. You will receive a renewal notice about that time from National but you can be early by sending your dues to me before you receive that.

Our color guard is in the process of getting all new equipment for the current members and our new members.

I would like everyone to know that our new members are Josh Ableman, Grant Bergeron, Jim Minot and John Moulton. It is nice to have new blood in the color guard which will give us the ability to have people available for the functions we need to do.  I would ask that anyone that knows of any member that is in distress or has passed away to notify me so we may take appropriate actions.  I am happy to report that we are presently at 102.51% for membership for 2009. Let's surpass that in 2010.  If I can be of any assistance to anyone at anytime, do not hesitate to contact me and the Post at 436-7575, 436-7621 or my cell at 207-252-7532 or via email at boomapost6@comcast.net.  Thank you,

 Richard "Brooksie" Brooks, Adjutant

 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello ladies. Summer is finally here. I have started gathering the list of Chairmen. If you have the time and would like to help by being a chairman please call me at 207-252-7533 or email me at mainefun@rcn.com, be sure you put “Unit #6 Chairmanships” in the subject line. The chairmanships will be ratified at the next Unit #6 meeting on Thursday, September 10, 2009. At the September 10, 2009 meeting we will be having elections for Second Vice President. Due to the resignation of Janice Brown as First Vice President for the 2009 – 2010 year, the Second Vice President was given the option to move to the First Vice Presidents position. She chose to move up leaving a vacancy that should be filled.  LADIES (and any other member of the Frank E. Booma family), please get those recipes in to me as soon as possible. Remember that the cost of the Unit #6 Cookbook is $0.00 to the Auxiliary. Any monies we can raise from the Cookbook will be bonus monies to the Auxiliary. If you would rather, you may email the recipe(s) to me at the above email address instead of filling out the form that was supplied in last months Bulletin. We drained most of our funds this year on scholarships and sending girls to Granite Girls State. We NEED fund raiser monies. After National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky at the end of August 2009 we will know if the National Organization is raising the amount of our dues that have to be sent into Department starting with the 2011 year. The price of your dues will have to be voted on at the October 8, 2009 meeting. The change to the Constitution and By-Laws of Unit #6 will be read for the first time at the September meeting. If the price of the dues go up as much as we think they will, and we DO NOT raise the dues, we would only be keeping $1.00 of your dues to work with. That is nowhere near what we would need to function, never mind being able to keep giving the Scholarships or to send girls to Granite Girls State. Watch for Fundraising requests that will be mentioned in future Bulletins. We have thought of some fun ways to raise monies!!!! The 2010 membership cards will be here after the Department Convention that ends on June 28, 2009. Please pay your dues and be an EARLY BIRD. You do not have to wait for the dues notice from the National Organization. Read Commander Desper’s article to find out why being an EARLY BIRD can be beneficial.
