THE FRANK E BOOMA POST 6

 NEWSLETTER

Founded 1919

April 2009

 Commander -- Frank Desper

COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

The Frank E. Booma Post 6, 3-time National Champion and 11-time State Champion Color Guard was requested to present colors at the New Hampshire, Manchester Wolves Game on Friday, April 24, 2009 along with several other distinguished color guards throughout the state, if you have time and like arena football come out and enjoy the ceremony and game. I spoke with Steve Fowle, editor of the New Hampshire Gazette. He conveyed to me that the state is discussing the revitalization of the Sara Long and Memorial Bridges. He is concerned, as are many others in our community, to which they are notifying as many people and organizations as they can to get involved with the outcome of the two bridges. His feels that since the Memorial Bridge was specifically dedicated to the “veterans,” we as a veterans organization should take a stand for the revitalization of the bridges instead of demolition. Our conversation was lengthy and very informative. I brought up this topic at our March meeting. To let you know, Post 6 will take an active interest in the Memorial Bridge project. If you would like to read more about the Memorial Bridge project, log onto the New Hampshire Gazette website at www.nhgazette.com. We had second nominations for Officers, in total several members stepped up to the plate to accept nominations. A few positions have multiple candidates campaigning. I encourage you to come to the Post and meet the perspective candidates, maybe speak with them about your concerns and get a feel as to their views on the future of the Post. The polls open at 0700 hours Thursday, April 16, 2009 and close at 1900 hours. Installation of Officers will be held the following Wednesday, April 23, 2009 at 7 p.m. I received some E-mails concerning “how to” obtain DD-214’s of service members or those who are deceased. The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans or their families to file for their DD-214 online http://vetrecs.archives.gov/ . While I’m on the subject, I have been going through our enrolment records and some of our DD-214’s are MIA. The list isn’t long. However, if you’re not sure if the Post has a copy of your DD-214 on file, please send us one. Your DD-214 is a major link between the Post and National Headquarters and it will keep everyone’s records up to date. The Easter Bunny is coming to the Post in April. Bring your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to our Annual Easter party. A good time will be had for all. All the children that attend will get their picture taken with the Easter Bunny. It is my sad duty to report that Richard (Rick) Sarno (22 year member) and Archie Greene (39 year member) have been called by the Supreme Commander of us all, may their souls go marching on.

 Frank Desper, Post Commander

There is a sign up sheet in the Grille for anyone interested in helping. I attended a meeting of Legion baseball recently. The season will be abbreviated this year ending in July and with only 15 games played. All games will be district games this year also. The year is almost over as elections approach and I want to thank everyone that volunteered for our functions this year. It was greatly appreciated and I want to thank you for allowing me to serve you in this position. My successor will do well with your help in the future.

Richard “Brooksie” Brooks, Post Jr. Vice Commander

 SERVICE OFFICER’S MESSAGE

President Obama has dropped a plan to bill private insurance companies for the treatment of veterans with service-connected disabilities and injuries. American Legion National Commander David K. Rehbein applauded the move. American Legion Spokesman Peter Gaytan appeared on Fox News and explained why the plan would not serve veteran’s best interests.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

April is always thought of for those last big snow storms of winter and the bursting of the crocuses. April also means the elections of the Auxiliary Officers for our Unit. Installation of Officers, Thursday, April 23, 2009 7 p.m. The Auxiliary meeting for April will be on the third Thursday, April 16, 2009 right after the closing of the polls. During the meeting the ballots will be counted with the results announced before the meeting is adjourned. After the meeting the results will be announced in the Grille along with the Post's and SAL’s results. The membership attending the last meeting of Unit #6 voted to allow the Cookbook after being informed of the generous offer of a Legionnaire to publish the book for FREE. The COOKBOOK is a GO!!!! Please drop in to the Post and pick up the forms to print your recipe onto and then return them to me either thru the mail, or drop them off at the Post. The forms are in a file holder in the cellar way. The file folder box above them is where you return them. If you find electronic submissions easier, you can e-mail them to me at mainefun@rcn.com Please put "recipe" in the subject line. I have had some comments on the "Rules" attached to each form. Please don't let them scare you off. I asked for those so that there could possibly be uniformity in the style of the recipes. If they are too confusing, just print your recipe as you would for anyone else. Thank you in advance for any and all recipes that you contribute. The Legion family is looking for help on the 16th of May at the Department Commander's Testimonial at the Moose. Please contact Richard Brooks or Frank Desper for more info.
