THE FRANK E BOOMA POST 6

 NEWSLETTER

Founded 1919

December 2005

 Commander -- Richard “Brooksie” Brooks

Commander’s Message

My first item I want to address is the recent elections in the City of Portsmouth. We have many members that believe that not being registered to vote or not voting makes no difference in any election in this country. We had a great example of this being incorrect in the elections for City Council, John Hynes lost by 2, can you understand this, 2 votes. John is a member of the Post. Did we fail him because we did not get out and vote? I know many of our members are not even registered to vote. This is extremely sad. I wish we had people that cared for our country enough to take the time to vote and do not pass it off as not making a difference. There is a recount happening for John Hynes. Voter apathy is a very serious thing in this country.  In many countries people go to the polls to vote at the risk of their lives and they have a 90% turnout. We are not at risk at all and we do not come close to that.  What is wrong with that picture? Our veterans served and died to give us this right and we totally ignore it. This is a slight to those that earned us this right.   Recently we had a dinner scheduled for Friday November 8, 2005 by the Auxiliary Color Guard. In the future. If you have a scheduled event such as this, I expect it to happen. We had many members show up for this and it did not happen. I don't care that it was a problem with one organization or another. You made a commitment and did not keep it and disappointed many members. I will not tolerate this happening again.  I once again find that I have a member of this organization making allegations against people in the Post. I am sorry about this. It is a Past Commander. I wish if he had a problem, he would bring his concerns to me instead of outside the Post. I hate to point any finger but if it works, that may be the best way to correct things.  I want everyone here to support our other organizations, the Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion. They are as important as we are. They do more work in the organization than we do on an average.  I want to ask all American Legion members to come to the next meeting; we have a major announcement at that meeting. I want to thank all the members that have supported me this year as Commander. It is a difficult position and with help from the membership it is worth the work. It would be easier with more members attending meetings.   I thank you all.

 Richard “Brooksie” Brooks, Commander

Hi Ladies – I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.  On Saturday, December 3, 2005 the Unit will be holding a Cherry Tree Raffle.  You pick a cherry off the tree for $1.00 and match a number to the prize.  We will have lots of prizes and it is a lot of fun.  So come down and support us.  This will run from Noon and until the last cherry is picked off the tree.  Our next Unit Meeting is Thursday, December 8, 2005 at 7 p.m.  This will be our Christmas Get Together.  Please bring a dessert to share and a small gift ($10) to swap.

A Little Bit of News – Sheila Brooks and I went to visit Betty Sanford. She is looking good and doing well.  Betty misses all her friends at the American Legion and the V.F.W.  Betty wishes to thank everyone who visited, sent cards and called.  Betty also conveyed a special thanks to June Daley.

A Little Bit of History – Congratulations to Vivian Snow, past Unit 6 president and Past Department President from her appointment to the 8/40 Nationale Leadership Committee.  Vivian has been active in the Auxiliary and 8/40 for many years.  The 8/40 is a subsidiary of the American Legion Auxiliary dedicated to the welfare of children afflicted with tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, lung and other respiratory diseases as well as providing scholarship to those pursuing nursing.   Partners in the 8/40 are Auxiliary “Sisters” developing friendships and promoting fellowship.
