THE FRANK E BOOMA POST 6 NEWSLETTER Founded 1919 JULY 2007 Commander -- Elliott Antequera COMMANDER’S MESSAGE First we thank the many members and our Color Guard who attended Department President Karyl Horn’s testimonial dinner May 28th an event that was enjoyed by everyone. Karyl Horn a member of the Post 6 Family has represented us in the most outstanding manner. She has added to a most impressive history of Post 6 members that have contributed beyond post membership in favor of a better American Legion. Thank you for your service. A thank you also goes to those who attended this year’s memorial services and parade honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice protecting our Nation. We salute you. Congratulations to Austin Nickerson, Robert Tibibeault, Nobel Cassell and Steve Moore winning 1st place June 3rd in the Department Spring Golf Tournament. Thank you and good job. Our State Convention was a success. George McCall was elected and installed as Department of New Hampshire Vice Commander. He now represents us on a Post, District and Department level. Well done George. Our Color Guard took 1st place in the Ceremonial Color Guard Competition and 1st place in the Huber S. O’Neil Color Guard Competition. They are 2007-2008 New Hampshire State Champs. Congratulations and thank you on behalf of all our members. Now come National and I invite those of you who believe in the value of this organization to get involved and encourage others to commit and support our programs. Last but not least I want to thank that member who made our state convention a most memorable one. Richard, Brooks, Convention Organizer, Eugene Bragg, Hospitality Room Host and Cook (great food an d drinks), Mike and Dustie Richard, Host and Organizers, Paul Robertson and Donald Nadeau as hosts/bartenders. Thank you also to the many members who took the time to attend and support and even help when it was needed although your names are not mentioned here we are grateful for your show of family. On a personal note I am very fortunate to represent Post 6 with such outstanding members doing such an amazing job. Thank you and keep up the good work. July 21st – Unit July 28th – Post SERGEANT-AT-ARMS’ MESSAGE The Post Color Guard will be holding its monthly Fish Fry on Friday, July 6, 2007 from 4 - 7 p.m. Dan Yoder, Sergeant-At-Arms ADJUTANT’S MESSAGE Well, the State Convention is over and it is time to go back to work as your Post Adjutant. The first thing I want to remind all Post, Auxiliary and Squadron members is that should you move and/or change our name, please let me know. So far this year I have had over two dozen pieces of mail returned because of no return addresses. August 29-30th American Legion National Convention in Reno, NV. September 9, 2007 there will be a Inter-Post Fall Golf Tournament at the Loudon Country Club. SQUADRON COMMANDER’S MESSAGE To all S.A.L members our last meeting was June. We will meet back in September. Everyone have a great summer and be safe. Also I would like to thank Frank Desper for helping me with the last S.A.L Surf n Turf. I am still looking for volunteers for Saturday Surf N Turf. It will be gratefully appreciated for S.A.L. members to step up and help out. Upcoming events will be the Children's Outing - we will need volunteers to set up, cook, and clean up, etc. There is a signup sheet by the service area. In closing I would like to congratulate the POST Color guard for taking first place this year in both categories. It is my understanding the convention went well and all those attending had a great time. I will see you in September - have a great summer. Yours in comradeship,

Commander SQUADRON ADJUTANT’S MESSAGE The 2008 SAL membership cards are in. Come in and get your card and get an early bird stamp. Dues re still $20 per member, $9 for juniors and $8 for duel members. Make checks out to Sons of the the American Legion. We need HELP with the SAL Surf and Turf, the second Saturday of each month. Anyone wishing to help, please talk to Commander Leo Peters. There are no SAL meetings in July or August. See you all in September at our next meeting. I wish everyone a happy and safe summer. Bob Prendergast, SAL Adjutant PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Summer is here and school has been out for a while. Please be aware of the short and tall pedestrians as you drive around. You never know when a child will unthinkingly dart into the road. I would like to thank the Unit membership for electing me as your President. Please feel free to come to your meetings to voice your opinions, see firsthand what is going on and to offer your services whenever you are needed. Remember that the third Saturday of the month is the Auxiliary's Saturday for Surf AND Turf. The money is used to pay the scholarships we give out each year. COME ON IN, JOIN THE FUN AND WIN THE PRIZES!!! Department Convention is over; Karyl Horn will be the NEC after National Convention in August. She has had a great and successful year as our Department President. I am sure she is ready for a less busy year. At Convention Sheila Brooks was elected as the District #3 Alternate Director for the coming year with Glenda Joyce as the District #3 Director. Mariann Perreault will remain as District #3 Commander until such time that George Everard is healthy enough to assume the duties. Congratulations to Paula Hollingsworth for winning Frederick J. Manley trophy for best Americanism report in District 3. August 18th & 19th the United States Air Force will be at Pease holding an Air Show to celebrate The Air Force Birthday. (the Air Force is 60). The Frank E. Booma Post #6 Family will be having a food booth. Volunteers are needed to work the booth. If you have a few hours to spare we could use your help. With 125K to 150K attendees expected the food booths should be very busy. One advantage to working the booth -- A GREAT vantage point to see the show. The first regular meeting of the Unit will be on September 13, 2007. Nominations and elections for the unfilled positions of Sergeant-At-Arms and Historian of the Unit will be held at this meeting. If you are interested, please show up at the meeting. If you are interested and CAN NOT be at the meeting please have a Letter of Intent to the President prior to the meeting so that you can be considered for the office of your choice. The 3rd annual Unit #6 Cherry Tree fund-raiser will be held at a date to be announced. Please keep your Unit in mind while shopping or while cleaning out your attic. Please feel free to call me at 207-252-7533 to donate any newly purchased item or "like new" used item. Items will be stored at the Post home at 96 Islington Street, Portsmouth. Congratulations to the Post #6 Color Guard for winning the Hubert O'Neil Award as well as the Ceremonial Trophy at the Department Convention. Well done boys!!!! Sheila Brooks, Unit President AUXILIARY MEMBERSHIP Ladies – The 2008 membership cars are in. We will start distributing them July 1, 2007. There are still 23 members out there who have not paid their 2007 dues. Also if you lose or misplace your membership card, you will be charged $1.00 (towards Children & Youth) for a new card. Needed are any name changes or address changes. Shirley Calvert, Membership Chairman GRILLE STEWARD’S MESSAGE I would like to thank everyone for coming of our Father’s Day buffet. It was a good time with great food and Doo Wop played by Bill Loomis – Thank you Bill! We have few new bands this month – hope to see you there. The Visitors and Sharon Jones are back with new sounds and are always entertaining. We have three new additions to our Legion Family. Congratulations to Anne Sullivan on the arrival of granddaughter Norah Ann Sullivan born June 14th, also to Ruth and Jamie Richard, they have twin granddaughter Gina and Mikayla Verra born on June 12th. On July 3rd from 4 to 6 pm we will be having cookout in the parking lot. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage subs and salad for sale so stop down and eat before the fireworks. We would also like to thank the SAL for their generous donation of a new microwave oven they purchased for the Grill area for the use of our members. Thanks again! So do not forget we always have free coffee and snacks, jukebox and video games all the time and Surf N Turf Saturday afternoons and bands every Saturday evening. So come in and enjoy.
