 NEWSLETTER

Founded 1919

 Commander -- Elliott Antequera

COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

Every Legionnaire knows what POW/MIA stands for, but how about MIAP? The National Executive Committee of the American Legion, Past Resolution 24 May 9-10, 2007 to support the mission of the Missing in America Project in locating and identifying the unclaimed cremated remains of veterans and securing a final resting place for these forgotten heroes.

MIAP has recognized the need to bury indignant and forgotten veterans, whose remains have been languishing on the shelves of funeral homes, mortuaries and state hospitals across the United States for decades. Some identified cremated remains have been dated back as far as the Spanish-American war in the 1890's. Their stories have begun to emerge from the shadows of society's forgetfulness. In Michigan, they're working to identify 350 sets of cremated remains recently discovered. In Reno, 34 unburied vets were recently discovered. Idaho alone has found and interred 91 vets. In Oregon, of the 3500 cremated remains that have been found, 1000 are expected to be veterans.

It is the sacred obligation of all Americans to honor our deceased veterans. As cremated remains continue to be discovered across the country, volunteers are needed to bring closure to these deceased American veterans by ensuring they receive a respectful internment. Any legionnaire interested in volunteering should contact Fred Salanti, Coordinator of MIAP, at

The American Legion supports the Missing in America Project (MIAP). We at Post 6 Portsmouth New Hampshire also support this honorable effort. No Veteran should be forgotten.

WE NEED A FEW GOOD LEADERS!

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT TODAY

JUNIOR VICE COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

I would like to thank the Commander (Elliot) and Sue Desper and Sheila Brooks for the help on the Valentine's Day dinner for the ladies of the Post. It was a good turnout.

I want to inform the members of a program that the American Legion presently has, it is called the Family Services Network. It is set up so that any member of a deployed serviceman or woman can call a national 800 number and request assistance. They are then directed to a local Post. This is to assist them in minor things such as baby sitting, repairs to their cars, snow blowing, grass cutting, etc. I have notified the Air Guard liaison of this program and hope that we have members that would avail themselves to assist our servicemen and women. This is one way we can be of service to them and advance the aims of the American Legion.  I am a candidate for Adjutant for the upcoming year. It has been a pleasure serving you as Jr. Vice Commander this year but I need to move on to a more important position where I can make a difference.  Many of you know I held this position previously and I feel I did a good job.  If I am elected I can promise that the minutes of the meetings will be done in a timely manner and legible (this is important for the gaming commission and the IRS), the memberships will be processed promptly, the address and membership changes done promptly, all problems addressed immediately and a correct answer to you as soon as possible, guidance to the officers as needed as required by the national by laws. This is one of the most important positions in our organization and I think it needs to be done properly and I promise to do that. I would appreciate your vote on this on April 17.  The Children's Easter party will be on Sunday March 9, 2008 from 12:00 to 3:00. See last month's newsletter for details or this month’s from the Auxiliary Children and Youth Chairman.  Thank you,

Richard “Brooksie” Brooks, Jr Vice Commander

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Thankfully Spring will soon be upon us. With spring comes Easter. So far only a few Gift Certificates have been mentioned to me as coming in for the Auxiliary Easter Fund Raiser. We will work with what ever we get for prizes.   Please help us out and bring some in. The event will take place on March 22, 2008.  The Auxiliary will be working the Surf N Turf on March 15th. Please come out and support us. There are always laughs to be had during the Surf N Turf.  A big THANK YOU to Carol Tuley for the beautiful Valentine's baskets she donated that were raffled. The monies help the Unit immensely.  I hope you signed up your children for the Easter Party on March 9th. The deadline is February 29th.  See Janice Brown's message for information about the Auxiliary dinner on March 21, 2008.

REMINDER!!!! The nominations for Officers of Unit #6 will be held at the March 13th Unit meeting. If you can not attend the March meeting then you need to have a letter of intent in to the President or Secretary prior to the start of the meeting.

ELECTIONS will be held on April 17, 2008 from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM with the April Unit meeting to follow at 6:00 PM during which time the ballots will be counted and totals relayed to the other organizations when they announce theirs. I hope to see a large part of the Post #6 family come out to VOTE and be in attendance for the announcements. Good luck to all that run for Office.  INSTALLATION of Officers will be on May 1, 2008. I hope that we will have a large part of the Frank E. Booma family there to help celebrate the Installation of the Officer's of Frank E. Booma for the year 2008-2009.
