THE FRANK E BOOMA POST 6

 NEWSLETTER

Founded 1919

March 2010

 Commander -- Frank Desper

COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

The pace will pick up around the Post very soon.  It was voted on to make some major improvements to the Post.  One was to install a fire suppression sprinkler system.  Other upgrades voted on were to purchase new heating and air conditioning units.  The installation and upgrades will coincide with the Grille’s arrangements of label plates to be inlayed on the bar.  We will finish the entire project with a fresh coat of paint and have the carpets professionally cleaned.  We are looking for a lot of volunteers to help with moving Grille furniture, removing the memorabilia from the walls, painting, polishing brass, washing the wood work then putting everything back.  With all the inside work being completed and if the weather permits, I would like to plant Flanders poppy seeds along the front of the post after the contractor’s finish setting the waterline into the Post.  See the Grille Steward’s message for more information.  Some more good news is the City Council is leaning in favor of moving the WWI monuments from the corner of Peverley Hill Road and Route 33 to Junkins Avenue across from City Hall in the Veteran’s Park area.  The move should be complete by Memorial Day.  District 3 Spring Conference will be held at Rochester Post 7 on Friday, March 26, 2010 starting at 1900 hours, please try to attend this event.  Second nominations for Post Officers will be held at our next Post meeting on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 1800 hours.  If you are unable to attend please have a letter of intent to the adjutant before the start of the meeting.  There are many things happing around the Post, within the District, State, National and the Community please read on or log onto www.feboomapost6.org to find out more ways to get involved with the American Legion.  It is my sad duty to report that John Cronin (64 year member) has been called by our Supreme Commander may his soul go marching on.

JUNIOR VICE COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

The next event we have coming up is the Children’s Easter Party on April 11, 2010 at 2:00 pm and I have it on good authority that the Easter Bunny will be stopping by for a visit. The party is for children 15 years and under. There is a sign-up slip in order to have a count of how many will be attending. We do ask that the children be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Deadline for sign-up is April 5, 2010. There will be an envelope in the grille for the sign-up slips. The sooner the slips are in the better for an accurate count of those attending.  I would like to thank all of the Post 6 Family that came to the St. Valentine’s Day Dinner and also those that volunteered to help. If it were not for your help, support and participation many events may have fallen by the way side.

As you can see we have some vacancies in the various offices. We will have second nominations on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 1800. If you are interested in a position, please be at the meeting or have a letter of intent to me prior to the meeting.  Elections will be on Thursday, April 15, 2010. Polls are open at the Post from 0700 to 1900. We could use some members to be available during the day to check names of people voting. If you can help please contact me.

Installation of officers will be on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 1900 at the Post.  If you have a key card for the door to the Post, please be very careful with it. I am out of keycards and we are in the process of changing the system but it will be a while and until we do there are no more keycards to issue.  Membership is still trickling it, we are at 85.85% for 2010 but we need to do much better. If you know any members, ask them if they have renewed and if not, please encourage them to do so. You can also help out by signing up new members in the Post. If you know someone who is a veteran and eligible, ask them to join or to contact me and I will assist them.  The Post is sponsoring a cook out at the V.A. Hospital on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 1115. We need volunteers to help with this. If you are interested, there is a training course to attend on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 1200 at the V.A. Hospital. Contact me if you need further information.  If I can be of any assistance to any member at any time, please do not hesitate to contact me. My email is boomapost6@comcast.net and my cell phone is 2072527532.  Thank you,

Richard “Brooksie” Brooks, Post Adjutant

Nominations for Officers will be held at the Thursday, March 11, 2010 Auxiliary meeting. Elections of Auxiliary Officers will be on Thursday, April 15, 2010 from 8:00 AM  to 6:00 PM with the Auxiliary meeting to follow close of balloting. I hope to see a large turnout at the March meeting and at the Elections. It will soon be time to do the reports for the end of the year. Whatever you have been doing for your neighbors, to support Girl Scouts, Boys Scouts, beautifying your neighborhood, helping at soup kitchens, or any other type of volunteering please let us know what you have been doing so that we can send an accurate report to Department. Now is the time to request Scholarship applications for your family members furthering their education.  Send your request to: American Legion Auxiliary Unit #6, 96 Islington Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801. GRILLE STEWARD’S MESSAGE

Hello and welcome to March.  We made it through January and February and hopefully we are on the downside of the cold weather!!! Thanks to everyone who called me on my last newsletter input as I predicted we did have fun and the food as usually was great.  Thanks again to those who made it a success!  We have a busy March with St. Patrick’s Day coming up.  We will be serving corned beef and cabbage with all the good stuff as well as Karaoke from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and green beer specials.  The meal is $5.00 per plate and will be served from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.  I can bet it will be delicious, get here early!   We will be having Karaoke again this month with a change in the date. Darlene is going to the islands and refuses to bring me along, so the date will be the Friday, March 26, 2010, so mark your calendar!  We will be doing the bar tags this month.  Do not have a date yet, still scheduling it with the carpenters who are donating their time and labor to do this.  We will be moving upstairs and will need some help with the move, so check with me for an official date.  We are going to do other repairs as well as some cleaning. We have a great band lineup this month. So come in, bring your dancing shoes and enjoy the evening.  I would like to thank the Dale Orr Jazz ensemble for entertaining us.  They stop in on a Friday night once a month and put on quite a show.  Check them out!  Hope to see you, cannot do it without you, stay warm and safe
