COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

August 2008 is the month that will go into the history books of Frank E. Booma, Post 6. The Rededication Ceremony was a great success, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, Speaker of the House for NH. Terie Norelli and Portsmouth Mayor Tom Ferinni were guest speakers. Former Congressman Jeb Bradley was in attendance along with City Counselor Laura Pantelakos. The American Legion Baseball season is over; our own Post 6 team has won the District Title, State Title to finish the season runner-up at Regional Competition in Bristol, Conn. We are all proud of the team's effort and spirit of the game. The Post sponsored a banquet for the team at the Portsmouth Elks Lodge August 20, 2008 and presented them with new State Champion jackets. After dinner, the team managers presented me the trophies and a signed game ball from the team. They are on display in the Post Grille. A very good showing of the Post was present, to include the families and other supporters of the team. Portsmouth Mayor Tom Ferinni requested the team assemble at the September Council Meeting in City Hall to be recognized and congratulated. Our Delegates returned from National Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, come to our next Post Meeting to hear their reports. Nominations are fast approaching, if you are interested in becoming a Delegate contact the Post Adjutant. I attended a meeting with the District Director of the Daniel Webster Counsel, (Boy Scouts) and presented the information to the Post floor for August. It was voted on and passed to sponsor a troop in Portsmouth. If you are interested in becoming a scout leader, troop supporter or need to discuss other issues, contact me at the Post 603-436-7575 or email cmdr_post6@comcast.net.  The Adult Outing is September 13, 2008 starting at 2 pm.  Super surf and turf will kick-off the outing in the upstairs hall, all other games and raffles will follow. A sign-up sheet is posted in the Grille for these events. Our annual Old Timer's Softball Game, Post 6 vs. V.F.W. Post 168 is September 21, 2008 at the Portsmouth Middle School Field starting at 11 am. I want to thank all of the volunteers that are stepping up in supporting our Post. I want to send a special Thank You to our Past Commander George Remick (1981) for the flower arrangement supporting the Baseball Team and Rededication Ceremony. In closing, an old sea story for you, "a ship is only as good as its crew," the order is "Haul in the brow; make ready to cast-off all lines."

ADJUTANT’S MESSAGE

I have just come back from the National American Legion Convention, in Phoenix AZ. As your Department Commander I had to attend many meetings, at these meeting I received a lot of reports from the various Committees, in my next newsletter I will share some of the information I have with you.

At the Convention there was a lot of discussion concerning membership and member participation. At present membership is looking good, the National Commander said that we have 4,600,000 members, this includes the Auxiliary and Squadron. The negative side of this is that very few of our Legion, Auxiliary and Squadron members are giving a helping hand in running this great organization, this organization meets with Congress and discuss various issue concerning veterans and their families. The American Legion after some meeting with Congress a new GI Bill has been passed.

George McCall, Post Adjutant

JUNIOR VICE COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

I want to congratulate our Legion baseball team on winning the N.H. State Championship, this is a first for the Frank E. Booma Post 6 and they went to Bristol, Ct. where they played in the championship game and did lose by one run. They had a fantastic year and I am very proud of them. Legion baseball is one of my favorite programs of the American Legion and this was a great accomplishment.  The Adult outing is right around the corner on Saturday Sept. 13th beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Post home. Members are free and guests are $10.00. We have a lot of things scheduled for the day so come on down and join us.  The annual Old Timers game is Sunday Sept. 21st at 11:00 a.m. If you are interested in playing you must be at least 40 years old for the men and any age for women. It will be held at the Jr. High School. There is a sign up sheet in the Grille. Come and join us for a fun day.  We have a raffle for the Legion baseball team to raise money for next year's team. Tickets may be purchased in the Grille or call myself or the Commander for more information.  I hope everyone’s summer was a fun and safe one and let us all stay safe going into winter.  We have members that recently deployed to Afghanistan with the 157th Security Forces; I want to thank Matt Karlson, Ruth Richard, and Tony Lozada. Sheila and Al, Paul, Elliot for being at the send off for the 157th Security Forces departure.  Our own, Dan Yoder deployed and we enjoyed being there for it.  The Auxiliary is in the process of getting the names of the troops and getting care packages to them while they are gone. We can use everyone's help in this. You may contact Auxiliary President Sheila Brooks on this.  Let us all remember our troops during these troubled times.

Richard “Brooksie” Brooks, Jr Vice Commander
